The Study of Finance

  • According to the National Association of Colleges and Employers Summer 2010 Salary Survey the current average salary for a finance major is $50,356/year.
  • There are many organizations where entry-level positions are available. These include:
    • Financial institutions such as banks, credit unions and savings and loan companies
    • Bank regulatory agencies such as the Federal Reserve and the FDIC
    • Non-profit organizations
    • Privately and publicly held businesses
    • Brokerage and investment companies
    • Real estate firms
    • Insurance firms
    • Federal, state and local government units and agencies
  • The concentration will provide you with a good knowledge base from which you can pursue various certificates, such as Chartered Financial Analyst or Certified Financial Planner. It is also a solid base for pursuing the various licenses required in the securities, real estate and insurance industries.
  • You will have the opportunity to actively manage a portion of the University’s endowment fund through the Investment Practicum course.
  • Knowledge gained can be applied to your personal financial activities to help you reach your personal financial goals. As individual retirement plans become more prevalent in the future, understanding alternative investment opportunities will be important.
  • The concentration program will help you acquire important skills such as critical thinking, verbal and written communication and teamwork relationships.
