Brandon Haynes, Carlos Porras, Lauren McQuatters and Jacey Patton competed against over 30 teams from colleges across Texas at the Texas American College of Sports Medicine Conference’s Student Bowl Competition in Austin last March. The students answered Jeopardy-like exercise science questions covering topics including anatomy & physiology, fitness assessment & prescription and nutrition among others.

The Student Bowl was an excellent experience for Lauren McQuatters who said she had not attended anything like it before.

“Seeing all the schools there for their graduate programs was really interesting because I got to talk to them about pursuing my education further,” McQuatters said. “It was just all in all a really good experience getting to meet new people that were pursuing the same major as me and being able to make new connections for later on in my career."

“They spent the first part of spring semester practicing and reviewing materials they had learned in class,” Robert Thiebaud, Ph. D. said. “In addition to the competition, they got to see students from other programs, see research from other schools and listen to lectures from some of the top scientists in the field of exercise science.”

The preparation and guidance from Dr. Thiebaud is just one example of the purposeful time and mentorship that School of Education students are immersed in every day at Texas Wesleyan.
