Hatton W. Sumners Scholarship

"By encouraging the study, teaching and research into the science and art of self-government, to the end that the American people may understand the fundamental principles of democracy and be guided thereby in shaping governmental policies."

— Hatton W. Sumners Foundation Mission Statement

About the Award

The endowed Hatton W. Sumners Scholarship Program was established at Texas Wesleyan University in 1994. Since that time, many TXWES students have been honored as Sumners Scholars; they represent only one portion of the total Sumners scholars network.

Hatton W. Sumners scholars receive $3,500 per semester for tuition and $500 for textbooks (up to $8,000 per academic year) in conjunction with other institutional or organizational scholarships. Total awards cannot exceed the cost of tuition.

The application deadline for the 2020-2021 Academic Year is Feb. 24.

The scholarship may be applied for a second school year (the senior year) provided the student meets the following criteria:

  • Good standing with the University
  • 3.0 grade point average or better
  • Completion of at least 12 credit hours per semester (full-time status)
  • Participation in a reasonable number of campus or civic activities for the benefit of Texas Wesleyan, the community and/or the Sumners Foundation

Please contact Dr. Michelle Payne or Dr. Christopher Ohan for more information.
