What will I learn?

The Ph.D. in Marriage and Family Therapy program will lead highly qualified LMFT practitioners through an in depth study of advance therapy methods.

Students will gain experience

  • Serving as counseling supervisors and classroom instructors

  • Seminar-style sessions with guest lecturers sharing an intensive review of therapy methodologies
  • Engaging research and publication opportunities for students
  • Off-campus training at renowned facilities in the U.S. and abroad
  • An independent study project
When are classes?

Classes will vary between traditional meeting format, seminar format, practicum and dissertation hours.

  • Traditional classes meet once a week for three hours in a face-to-face setting 
  • Seminar format classes meet Friday evening and all day Saturday during various times throughout the first two semesters 
  • Practicum courses require 100 hours of counseling at Texas Wesleyan’s Counseling Center. 
  • Dissertation courses require independent work with faculty oversight leading from design to proposal to defense of selected topic. 
What are your admission requirements?
  1. Bachelor’s degree and master’s degree from a regionally accredited college or university.
  2. Master’s degree in marriage and family therapy, professional counseling, social work, psychology or other related mental health field
  3. Completed coursework required for licensure as a LMFT in the state of Texas
  4. Full, associate or intern license in mental health field such as LMFT, LPC or MSW
  5. Master’s degree GPA of 3.2 or higher
  6. Interview with Graduate Counseling Faculty
  7. Writings sample proctored on site
Application Instructions and Deadlines

1. Application & Fee

Apply online for the Ph.D. in Marriage and Family Therapy Program program. Once you are in the application dashboard, you will be prompted to pay your $58 application fee. If you are not ready to pay the fee, you can log in later to complete this step. Please note, the application fee is waived for current Texas Wesleyan University students and alumni.

2. Resume

Your resume or CV should detail your professional qualifications for the program. It can be uploaded within the application or in the self-service center.

3. Official Transcripts

We need to see a transcript from every college or university you've ever attended. In many cases, you can order your transcripts online. All transcripts should be submitted to:

4. Letters of Recommendation

You'll need to have three letters of recommendations. References can include former professors, supervisors or a professional colleague. While completing the online application you will list your three references and their e-mail addresses for an electronic letter of recommendation to be submitted.
