Recycling on campus: Where are we?

With the addition of the Martin University Center, we expected to increase our recycling and added a second recycling dumpster on campus located across the street from Sid Richardson. Our goal was to at least double our recycling efforts on campus. The new building has recycling bins located in common areas, and we also included outdoor recycling bins around the building perimeter. Before the building went online, we had been recycling 1.1 tons of recycling materials per month. Once the Martin Center went online, our recycling tonnage jumped to 3.8 tons of recycling material per month!!

We more than tripled the amount of material we are diverting to the recycling center. Our diversion rate is now at 7% of waste being diverted. Thank you for utilizing the new recycling bins and for keeping TXWES blue, gold, and green!

Facts About Recycling

  1. Recycling helps society improve simultaneously: the environment, the economy, and sustainable manufacturing.
  2. Recycling prevents waste from going into the oceans.
  3. If the U.S. can reach a diversion rate of 75%, it would impact the environment as much as removing 55 million cars from U.S. roads each year.
  4. While manufacturers want recyclable materials back to reuse, they can’t reuse the materials if people don’t recycle right and contaminate the materials.

Facts are taken from Recycle Across America.
